NH State Rep Gary Gilmore – House District 16

Gary Gilmore NH State Rep

A lifelong New Hampshire resident, Gary moved to Dover in 1978 after graduating from UNH with a degree in psychology. As avid outdoorsman, Gary has long been a champion of protecting and preserving New Hampshire’s natural resources, and this year will have completed hiking over 1,000 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Gary raised his now adult son through the Dover schools, volunteering as a baseball and baseball coach for youth teams.

Gary spearheaded the creation of Dover’s recycling program in 1989, and has been on the solid waste advisory committee since its creation in 1991. In addition, while on the Dover City Council, Gary fought to preserve what today is the McConnell Center, and ensure that what is now the front lawn and veteran’s memorial was further preserved as green space as intended by donors at the dawn of the 20th century. He has spent the last 28 years as an election officer in Ward 3, working to ensure that every legally eligible voter has ballot access for free and fair elections.

While serving as a Democrat for ten years in the statehouse in the ‘90s, Gary was primary author of approximately 130 pieces of legislation which secured passage – in a Republican-controlled statehouse, no less. Not all his efforts were successful, of course – Gary has been an advocate for common-sense gun laws as far back as 1990, just as he was an outspoken advocate for a woman’s right to choose.

Professionally, Gary owned his own business as an independent carpenter for 35 years before taking a full-time position as a researcher for the New Hampshire state archives, from which he retired in 2023. In the course of his work for the archives, Gary visited every town hall in the state of New Hampshire – twice. In the same year. Gary, more than most, appreciates the breadth and diversity of community across New Hampshire and their differing needs.

Priority Issues

Gary’s three primary areas of focus if elected will be:

  • Protecting a woman’s right to make her own health care choices
  • Ensuring that every citizen who has the right do vote is able to do so in free and fair elections
  • Supporting legislation to protect and preserve the environment of New Hampshire for the health and enjoyment of all
