About Melena
Melena Lugo is a co-founder of Karlee’s Home Team, a nonprofit established in memory of 10-year-old Rochester native Karlee Drew. After fulfilling Karlee’s final wish, the organization was founded to celebrate her legacy of kindness and compassion. The motto “No matter how big or small, you can make a difference” embodies their mission and approach to life.

Candidate Statement
Hello, my name is Melena, and for the past 19 years, I’ve proudly called Rochester my home, raising five wonderful children and now cherishing my role as a grandmother to my amazing granddaughter. Throughout this journey, I have dedicated countless hours to supporting the incredible programs Rochester offers, focusing on youth, young adults, and our unhoused neighbors in Strafford County.
As I run for State Representative, I am committed to amplifying the voices of those in our community who are often overlooked, advocating for a safe and secure environment for everyone.
I truly and wholeheartedly believe that everyone deserves a safe place to lay their head at night free from harm. I am committed to speaking for those whose voice may otherwise not be heard. I am committed to championing long-term, sustainable housing solutions that ensure every individual has access to safe, stable, and affordable living conditions, irrespective of their financial status. Everyone has the right to a secure home, and I will advocate fiercely for policies that promote inclusive housing options for all. My vision is to expand programs that support this fundamental need, ensuring no one is left behind in the pursuit of a decent place to live.
Family Support
Strengthening support for families is critical in fostering a nurturing environment for children to thrive. Single parents and couples alike face significant challenges, and we must prioritize affordable childcare and equitable access to extracurricular activities to level the playing field for all children. Additionally, comprehensive healthcare options are essential to ensure the well-being of families, while targeted support for foster care families can provide the stability and resources needed to nurture vulnerable children.
